Cows can Sense North and South?

A team of German and Czech scientists recently found that cows can sense north and south directions. After study of numerous satellite photographs of cow herds all over the world, the scientists came to this conclusion. Their findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

As many as 8,510 in 308 pasture plains were observed through Google Earth images and the research team noted the fact that, when grazing or resting, cows have the tendency to align their bodies in a north-south direction. Scientists involved in this research thinks that the magnetic field of the Earth is responsible for this behavior.

But the question is why cows do it? It seems that they do it for comfort! Their body temperature is about 102 and the leather doesn’t make it any easier for them to resist high temperatures. So, they rests in the north-south alignment that seems to help them keep cool!
