World's First Practical Jet Pack

Glenn Martin, an inventor from New Zealand has designed a jet pack that could allow you to fly to up to a distance of 30 miles. The jet pack was unveiled in front of thousands of people at AirVenture Oshkosh 2008, a air show in Wisconsin. In the show, one person demonstrated it by flying 3 feet off the ground for 45 seconds.

Glenn Martin claims that this is the world's first practical jet pack, as it is capable of flying an average-sized pilot 30 miles in 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel. This jet pack is designed to conform the Federal Aviation Administration's definition of an ultra light vehicle. So, according to rules, it won't require a pilot's licence to fly. The inventor plans to start selling the jet pack next year, for around £50,000 per piece. Want to buy one? Well, before that have a look at the following video!

According to a district official, the court was compelled to issue a summon to the seven year old dog, since police found that it was a threat to peace and law and order situation of the locality. So, the dog protects it's owner by biting those who tried to break into the house.

Well, the case will continue and Chhotu has been ordered to appear in court again on 5 August, together with his owner. Mystery of Northern Lights Solved?

Scientists at NASA have uncovered the mystery behind the spectacular northern lights or aurora borealis. It is the magnetic explosions about one-third of the way to the moon that powers geomagnetic storms and causes the northern lights. Five THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) satellites of NASA have uncovered this secret.

How the scientists confirmed this theory? The five small THEMIS satellites observed the beginning of a geomagnetic storm in February and the ground observatories in Canada and Alaska recorded the brightening of the northern lights. The storm was triggered by a phenomenon known as magnetic reconnection at about 80,000 miles from Earth. The southern lights or aurora australis also brightened and darted across the sky at the same time.

What is magnetic reconnection? Earth's magnetic field lines are regularly stretched like rubber bands by the solar energy. But, suddenly these lines snaps and thrown back to Earth and it reconnects. This sudden change creates a short circuit and causes a burst of light and movement near the northern and southern poles. That's why we see the spectacular shapes and colors, that dances across the sky.

Scientists hopes that these findings will help in further research of the geomagnetic storms that can harm astronauts in orbit and disrupt power and communications on Earth. Well, want to see the northern lights? Take a look at this time lapse video of northern lights recorded in British Columbia, Canada..

Blogging and Free WordPress Themes

I like Blogger platform because of it's simplicity and ease in blogging. This is the right platform to start blogging, without spending a cent. But, if you want to utilize the power of blogging, you will need some extra features that are absent on this platform. In my view, the best blogging platform in the world is WordPress. That's why, apart from this blog and a few other blogs, most of my blogs are powered by WordPress.

There are many advantages of the self-hosted WordPress blogging platform. Well, I am not going to discuss all those advantages on this post. Because you can check them by visiting WordPress.org. One thing I like about WordPress is the themes. They offers lots of options to personalize and optimize your blog. Even you can create a static portal or a news site with the help of a right theme, which is not possible with Blogger.

You can either choose a free theme or a premium theme for your WordPress blog. Premium themes comes with lots of features and customization options. But, to use them you need to spend some money. They are perfect if you want to create an unique and professional blog. On the other hand free themes means they are 'free' for use on blogs. There are thousands of free wordpress themes available in the web. All you have to do is to find the best and suitable theme.

But, how you are going to select the best free theme for your WordPress powered blog? Where you will find best free themes? Here, I would like to mention about Top WP Themes (www.TopWpThemes.com), a site dedicated to professionally designed free WordPress themes. On their site, you will be able to browse, test drive and download good quality themes for free. You can browse themes by category. For example, 2 columns, 3 columns, fixed width, right sidebar, widget ready etc.

Well, if you are new to WordPress and don't know how to install a new theme, then you must check their step-by-step guide on WordPress Theme Installation. This guide comes with some screenshot and nicely tells how to add a new theme to your blog. For any kind of help regarding themes, you can visit their support section.

My personal favorites regarding WordPress themes are the 2 column themes with right sidebar. What about you? Just browse the free themes on Top WP Themes. I am sure that you will find a suitable one for your blog.

No bids for Seattle's Self-cleaning Public Toilets

Seattle's $5 million experiment with self-cleaning public toilets was a disaster. So, Seattle Public Utilities decided to sell them off via eBay auction. They have already listed the five self-cleaning public toilets on eBay. But, to their back luck, the auction failed to generate the minimum bids of $89,000 needed to win the toilets.

Interestingly, the city has already spent about $5 million on maintenance of the toilets since they were acquired in 2004. The toilets were removed as they became havens for crime at Pike Place Market, the waterfront, Pioneer Square, the Chinatown International District and Capitol Hill. Despite the failure, Seattle Public Utilities will try to sell the German-made public toilets on eBay.

80 million year old fossil haddock

A 80 million year old fossil haddock has been discovered in a Maidstone garden pond. Interestingly, the fossil was being used by Peter Parvin, a retired policeman, as a display item in his garden pond for more than 15 years. According to Daily Mail, Mr. Parvin picked it up on a beach during a caravan holiday at Pevensey in East Sussex.

Mr. Parvin came to know about it's importance only after he mentioned about it to a volunteer from the local museum in Maidstone, Kent. The haddock will be sent to Poland for better analysis by researchers, after which Parvin will donate it to the local museum.

How Fasting Helped Me?

Recently, I was advised by my doctor to go for fasting! Sounds odd? A doctor is advising a patient to go for fasting? Why? I was having some minor stomach related complications. So, I went to a family doctor, who is also a good friend of mine. He examined me complications and found that it is not a serious problem. My liver is healthy and working nicely. But, the problem is that my digestion process is running too fast and gas is developed too often in my stomach. So, he advised me to go for fasting!

What is fasting? In simple words, fasting is a process of abstaining for food and or drink for a specific period of time. The reasons of fasting may be different for different individual. Some people may go for fasting due to religious reasons, while some people may wan to fast due to personal conviction or advise. But, one thing is right that, for ages fasting has been used as an effective treatment to many common diseases and illnesses. I have found the evidence of it's effectiveness after following one month of fasting schedule.

As advised by my friend, I started my fasting on the first Monday of June. I escaped food during the day and took light food during night. This continued for the next three Mondays. And now, after fasting for four consecutive Mondays, I am feeling much better. I think, my metabolic processes are working fine and there is no sign of earlier complications. So, fasting helped me to recover from those complication, without taking any medicines.

Note: Though fasting is being used and advised for ages, it may harm you, if followed without proper guidance. In some cases fasting may result in bad effects. So, never try to go for fasting without the advise of an expert. Because, for a good health, food is necessary!

CLEVER - Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport

Take a look at the vehicle in the picture above. This is CLEVER, a compact city vehicle for two with a tandem seat constellation and very low emission. It's length is 3066 mm, the width is 998 mm and the height is 1388 mm. The wheelbase is 2450 mm, the track width is 835 mm. The gross weight of CLEVER is less than 400 kg.

At the front there is a 17" wheel whilst at the rear there are two 18" wheels. As a result of its low width the vehicle is designed to tilt when cornering and has a computer-controlled hydraulic rolling system which results in a driving experience with zero lateral forces at tilting angles of up to 45°, similar to riding a motorcycle.

Its low kerb weight and a front-end surface area of just 1 m2 means that a gas-powered engine of just 15 kW can be used to power CLEVER. This will generate CO2 emissions of less than 60 g/km. Its top speed is approx. 100 kph, acceleration from 0 - 60 kph is less than 7 seconds and its range is approx. 200 km. Though it has a plastic body, an aluminum space frame construction will provide passive safety to the riders. via www.clever-project.net

Worth of a Bed Tester's Bottom

A bed tester in UK has just got his bottom insured for £1million. A bottom worth a million! Can you believe this? Sounds strange, but it is true. Graham Butterfield, 54, works as a sales director for Silentnight, a Lancashire-based bed firm. But, now he has became official "Bed Bouncer" at the factory in Barnoldswick after it emerged that his bottom was more responsive than the norm.

Butterfield's bosses said that his hypersensitive rear was so reliable in recognizing the different fillings in their mattresses that product developers began to consult him on new products. So, the bed firm got the bottom insured for £1million. It means that, in the event of Mr Butterfield's buttocks being damaged in an accident, insurance company Zurich will pay up to £1million.

Cancer treatment with Tobacco

Tobacco is injurious to heath and it may cause cancer. I think, every people know this fact. But a recent work by researchers from Stanford University in California reveals that tobacco may actually offer the means to treat cancer! What? Is it possible? Read on.

The researchers used the tobacco plants as factories for an antibody chemical specific to the cells which cause follicular B-cell lymphoma. Then, these antibodies are put into a patient newly-diagnosed with the disease, to "prime" the body's immune system to attack any cell carrying them. If successful, this would mean the body would then recognize and destroy the lymphoma cells.

Dr Ronald Levy, who is leading the research, said: "It's pretty cool technology - and it's really ironic that you would make a treatment for cancer out of tobacco. That appealed to me."

Well, this experimental vaccine has only been tested on a limited number of patients to check for any side-effects of using plant-produced antibodies. So, its effectiveness at fighting the deadly disease is still uncertain. Link

Fuel-saving Aircraft designed by Students

NASA announced last week the results of 2008 Fundamental Aeronautics Student Competition. This year students were asked to think about a revolution in aircraft, a vehicle that could become a next generation DC-3 type of transport vehicle. A team of 8 students from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta won the graduate student section of the competition. And the Undergraduate team awards went to a team of 6 students from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg.

The contest asked students to create a future subsonic transport aircraft that could carry up to 50,000 pounds, operate on runways between 1,500 and 3,000 feet long, and cruise at speeds between 595 and 625 mph - about the average speed of airliners today. The competition also stressed that the concept planes should be powered by alternative fuels and be quieter and more environmentally friendly than present commercial aircrafts.

The above picture shows the concept energy-efficient aircraft designed by the winning team. This concept plane will use battery power during take off. It will reduce noise and the electric propellers used for an initial boost would fold into the plane after takeoff to reduce drag. Definitely, we need some fuel-saving aircrafts, that are both eco-friendly and powerful.

The Serengeti Migration

The Serengeti is an ecosystem located in north-western Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30,000 km and about 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. The word "Serengeti" is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically "Serengit", meaning "Endless Plains". It contains several national parks and game reserves with different ecosystems including riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands. Serengeti is well known in the world, for it's mass animal migration. In fact, the Serengeti Migration is the largest and longest overland migration in the world.

What is Serengeti Migration? Around October, nearly 2 million herbivores travel from the northern hills toward the southern plains, crossing the Mara River, in pursuit of the rains. In April, they then return to the north through the west, once again crossing the Mara River. This is Serengeti Migration in brief. During the migration, herds of animals move in a circular route in a clockwise direction. So, this phenomenon is sometimes called the Circular Migration.

Why this migration occurs annually? Animals in Serengeti migrates because of rain or the lack of rain. When a seasonal drought dries up grass and water supplies in one area, the grazing animals move on to the next area along the Serengeti migration route where seasonal rains are falling. Migrating animals spend more time in the Serengeti National Park than in the Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Conservation Area during their annual circular journey.

Over a million wildebeests participate in the Serengeti Migration. Hundreds of thousands of zebra and Thomson's gazelles join them. Although lions and other carnivores do not migrate with the grazing animals, they feast on them when their paths cross. Over 250,000 wildebeest alone will die along the journey from Tanzania to Masai Mara Reserve in upper Kenya, a total of 500 miles. Death is often caused by injury, exhaustion, or predation.

The Serengeti Migration is known as one of the natural travel wonders of the world. In your life, you must try to see it. Well, before that watch a video on Serengeti Migration. It shows wildebeests crossing river Mara and more.

Big Dee-Dee : The Giant Lobster

This is Big Dee-Dee, a 10 kg giant lobster that was caught by fisherman Denis Breau from the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Since July 10, the giant lobster has been held in a lobster tank at a local fish market for auction. But, on Sunday, Breau changed is mind and has decided to hand over the lobster to the Huntsman Marine Science Center in New Brunswick province.

Now, the creature will be placed in one of the aquariums at the marine center and monitored closely to see how it adjusts to captivity. If Dee-Dee does not adjust to being held in the new tank, the marine center will look at ways to release it back in the Bay of Fundy. They hopes that this gradual process will help to increase the chances of survial of the giant lobster.

North Pole Marathon

The North Pole Marathon is one of the world’s most extreme marathons! It is run at the top of the World, that means at the exact Geographic North Pole. The length of the race route is 26.2 miles (42 km) and is run on the frozen Arctic ice floor with only about 6-12 feet of ice separating the runners from 12,000 feet deep Arctic Ocean. This is the only marathon in the world that is not run on any land.

The first North Pole Marathon occurred in 2002 when the race director covered the distance alone. In 2003, the first exploratory competitive race was advertised and attracted ten competitors. There were further races in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 making five competitive events to date. The race is now an annual fixture on the international marathon calendar and 127 people in all have successfully completed the event.

Well, running in the North Pole Marathon is not so easy. You will need to run at wind chill temperature of –30C or even below. The whole course will move with the direction of the Ocean current during the race. So, you will feel like running on land at the exact same longitude and latitude coordinates where you began. So, you will need good training, proper gears and a good health to complete the 26.2 miles distance. Well, the race organizer wants everybody to finish this amazing race. So, there is generally no cut-off time of major significance.

The next North Pole marathon is provisionally scheduled to take place on 8th April 2009. Competitors will leave Spitsbergen on 7th April and return to Spitsbergen on 9th March, therefore spending about 36-48 hours in the polar region. Want to join them?
