Triptych, 1976 sold for $86 million

On Wednesday night, Francis Bacon's painting Triptych, 1976, fetched $86.3 million (£44 million million) at Sotheby's in New York. Thus, Triptych, 1976 has become the most expensive work of contemporary art sold at auction.

The previous record for a work by the Irish-born Bacon was $US52.68 million for his Study From Innocent X, 1962, sold last year. Bacon, who died in 1992 at 82, is considered one of Britain's most important 20th-century artists.

Triptych, 1976 has featured in almost all important shows of Bacon’s work since it was first exhibited in Paris in 1977. Sotheby’s said that Wednesday’s auction, which made $362 million in total, was the best in its history.
